Banker’s Insulting Waitress Tip 1%
Just when you may have thought the ongoing battle between the 99% and the 1% was dying down, it may have been reignited. A wealthy banker left a $1.33 tip on a $133 lunch at the True Food Kitchen restaurant in Newport Beach, California.
To add insult to injury the word "tip" was circled on the receipt, and the banker wrote "get a real job" on the bill. The picture of the receipt was taken and uploaded to the blog Future Ex-Banker by a person who was dining with the anonymous banker. As expected, the blog received a lot of attention and has now been taken down. The author of the blog wrote, "mention the 99% in my boss' presence and feel his wrath. So proudly does he wear his 1% badge of honor that he tips exactly 1% every time he feels the server doesn't sufficiently bow down to his holiness."
People online who had a chance to see the blog post before it went offline and those who have been made aware of it on social media outlets are outraged. One person called the tip a "tale of greed and contempt," and another referred to it as "arrogance personified." The Web's general reaction to this story is eerily similar to an almost identical 1% vs. 99% scenario that took place last fall. In Washington state, a waitress received a tip of no money and advice scrawled on the receipt that told her she could "stand to lose a few pounds."
Our next story is more of a battle between environmentalists and big oil companies.
Lucy Lawless, most famous for her leading role in "Xena: Warrior Princess" in the '90s fantasy adventure series, was arrested over the weekend. Lawless had spent four days protesting on board a Shell oil ship with a group of six other environmental activists. The protest, organized by Greenpeace, was staged to raise awareness of oil drilling in the arctic. The global environmental organization opposes the drilling in New Zealand.
During the protest, Lawless live-tweeted what she was experiencing including, for example, "Seven of us came up the tower on Shell's drillship, but 4 days later 130,000 will come down. In solidarity we can #savethearctic." The protesters had to deal with the elements while atop the ship. The wind gusts proved difficult to withstand, but the activists held their ground. Chairman for Shell New Zealand, Rob Jager, said the protest had put people in danger. Jager also said he was disappointed that Greenpeace had not joined his company in a "productive conversation" about the drilling issue instead of protesting.
Lawless told the Associated Press that she got involved because she felt compelled to take a stand against oil drilling in the Arctic and global warming. However, the protest was brought to a halt when all of the activists were arrested and charged with burglary. Since then, more than 100,000 messages have been sent to Shell opposing its upcoming Arctic drilling plans. One supporter tweeted, "She may not be Xena in real life, but she is fighting for what she believes in." Another person tweeted that Lawless is a "true warrior princess."

Super Star Whitney Houston dead at 48
Grammy-winning pop legend and actress Whitney Houston was found dead in Beverly Hills, police said. She was 48.
The shock news came as the music industry gathered in Los Angeles for the annual Grammy awards show on Sunday, and a few hours ahead of a traditional pre-Grammys dinner in the hotel where Houston died.
Musicians took to Twitter to pay tribute to the singer, famous for songs including "I Will Always Love You," who had led a public battle with drugs.
"Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend ... She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth," wrote Mariah Carey.
Police confirmed her death in a brief statement outside the Beverly Hilton hotel, where stars were gathering for an annual pre-Grammys dinner hosted by veteran producer Clive Davis.
"At 3:55 pm, Whitney Houston was pronounced dead at the Beverly Hilton hotel," said Mark Rosen, a police spokesman.
Rosen said police received an emergency call from someone in her entourage and found Houston on the floor of her room on the hotel's fourth floor as attempts were being made to resuscitate her.
"There were no obvious signs of criminal intent at this time, and it is being investigated by the Beverly Hills police department," the police spokesman added.
The cause of death was not immediately known.
A mobile crime laboratory and a number of police cars were stationed outside the hotel, while inside guests watched live television coverage about Houston's death in the bar and lobby areas.
Condolences poured in on Twitter from shocked fans and from the famous, as sadness over the news spread through the entertainment world.
"We have lost another legend. Love and prayers to Whitney's family. She will be missed," said Christina Aguilera, while Rihanna wrote simply: "No words! Just tears #DearWhitney."
Grammys organizers the Recording Academy are scrambling to include some kind of tribute to Houston in Sunday's show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, according to CNN.
With a ferociously powerful voice and a dazzling range, Houston achieved stardom as a pop-soul singer known as "The Voice" and the "Queen of Pop." She also appeared in hit movies like "Waiting to Exhale" and "The Bodyguard."
From a musical family that included mother Cissy Houston, a gospel star, and Dionne Warwick, her cousin, Whitney Houston started out as a teen model and then made a dazzling segue to music.
Her hits included "How Will I Know," "Saving all My Love for You," and "I Will Always Love You."
Houston's trove of six Grammy awards included one for record of the year -- for a soaring cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," and another for album of the year for "The Bodyguard."
Houston, who grew up in New Jersey, was also a supporter of the anti-apartheid movement and South Africa's Nelson Mandela, on whose behalf she campaigned during his imprisonment.
She struggled with substance abuse, which took a toll on her health and career.
Houston has sold more than 170 million records worldwide but suffered a major career setback after admitting drug use during an abusive relationship with ex-husband Bobby Brown.
Brown was one of the hottest rhythm and blues singers in the late 1980s and early 90s, but became better known as the husband of Houston and for his frequent brushes with drugs and the law.
The pair, who were divorced in 2007, starred in a television reality series, "Being Bobby Brown," that featured their marriage, warts and all. They have a daughter Bobbi Kristina.
Brown was detained in Atlanta in 1993 for lewd conduct and for brawling in 1995. He was arrested for drunk driving in 1996 and for alleged battery of Houston in late 2003.

Nothing better than Duke-UNC rivalry
Take the Red Sox-Yankees, Alabama-Auburn, Ohio State-Michigan and any other rivalry that is a worthy competitor, but none of them equal the Duke-North Carolina basketball rivalry. None of them.
Had the Red Sox been worth a darn prior to 15 years ago, aside from a few flare-ups, that rivalry might have an argument. But the bottom line is the Yankees have dominated the series over time, and great rivalries can’t be so lopsided.
Alabama and Auburn have been at their combined best in recent years going back-and-forth on the last three BCS championships, but Auburn football over time should never, ever be compared to UNC or Duke basketball.
The Buckeyes and Wolverines are a tremendous rivalry and belong in the discussion, but they’ve each won just one national title since the late 1960s, and both have had rather lengthy mediocre stretches in each of the last two decades.
Army-Navy, Oklahoma-Texas, Kentucky-Louisville, Giants-Dodgers, Cardinals-Cubs, Celtics-Lakers, Eagles-Giants, and so on, are great rivalries that should not be diminished, but none are Carolina and Duke.
The Tar Heels and Blue Devils square off tonight at the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill for the first of at least two meetings this season, and the environment will be off the charts. It always is.
What separates this series from the others isn’t just that both are two of the best three or four programs in the history of college basketball, nor is it because they’ve exchanged back-to-back national titles twice in the last 20 years and have combined to win seven during that frame to go with 16 Final Four appearances, or because they’ve dominated what is historically the best conference in college hoops.
It also isn’t because Duke and UNC have done things the right way and without scandals, their players graduate and the programs have built families without peer in sports. With respect to Bama and Auburn, Ohio State and Michigan, and so many others, they simply have no case on the topic of integrity.
But it also isn’t because the schools are just eight miles apart, and the players often find themselves using the same barber, going to the same movie theater, or even dating siblings from the other side, like injured UNC guard Dexter Strickland dating Duke freshman Austin Rivers’ sister.
And it isn’t because perhaps the two greatest coaches in the history of the sport led these programs into greatness, and another Hall of Famer has stepped in to continue the amazing run in Chapel Hill.
It’s because of all of the above.
Duke and North Carolina is the greatest rivalry in American sports because it offers the fiercest level of competition between teams that are loaded with future NBA talent and almost annually are in contention for national championships. And they do this exercising integrity that has been slowly slipping away in all walks of American life for a long time now, and at an alarming rate in sports.
Duke and UNC play in unmistakable arenas, wear unmistakable uniforms, have coaches and players who have been, are and will be household names. Their games are memorable and epitomize competitiveness. How’s this as evidence: In the last 75 games played vs. each other, Duke has scored 5,858 points while UNC has scored 5,857.
It doesn’t get any closer than that and it doesn’t get any better than Carolina and Duke.

Maria Menounos stripped down to the bikini due to a lost Super Bowl wager
Last seen at the Super Bowl Tebowing with the man himself, "Extra" correspondent Maria Menounos was back in New York on Monday, standing in the middle of Times Square donning a red and blue bikini.
The 33-year-old Massachusetts native stripped down to the bikini due to a lost Super Bowl wager on her New England Patriots. Menounos lost the bet to colleague A.J. Calloway, who picked his hometown New York Giants.

If Calloway had lost, he would have worn a New England Patriots cheerleader outfit. Menounos had to wear the bikini, though she was able to keep warm (and give a shout-out to Tom Brady) by wearing black UGGs during the taping.
"I hate bets," Menounos said as she removed the robe. "I'm never doing this again."
